Refinished Mid-Century Modern Armchair

2020

I came across this tired, late 1960’s armchair in a vintage shop and decided to breath some new life into it. The finish was very opaque and had numerous scrapes and visible signs of wear. Almost every joint in the right side leg assembly had come loose, warranting disassembly and a reglue. I applied two coats of CitriStrip to remove the majority of the original finish and stain, followed by scraping any remaining finish off with a utility blade, and sanded all pieces to 180-grit. I could not identify the exact wood species of the frame so, as a precaution against blotching, I applied a coat of General Finishes Pre-Satin Wood Conditioner. I achieved the desired color by layering stains: two coats of General Finishes Honey Maple followed by one coat of General Finishes Nutmeg gel stain. The sealer was three coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal. New upholstery webbing to support the seat completed the project.
